Opening Day is here, and I am so ready.
No one asked, but in light of the season starting and with my excitement growing, I thought that I, a massive sports fan, would give my personal explanation for what I love so much about the NBA. In short, it’s the players, and how incredibly athletic/exciting/entertaining/fresh/savvy/really f-ing good so many of them are.
Check it out. Besides the NBA, my favorite “sports” to follow are Major League Baseball, the NFL, and college basketball (with some love for college football, European and MLS football/ and even hockey/tennis/golf when the time allows).
I like the history and tradition of baseball, and I love the stats, but truthfully, this year’s Playoffs kind of put me to sleep. Thing is, I’m a lifelong Dodger fan, and when their season ended in late-September, so did any true passion of mine for the game. I get the Extra Innings package, which is great, but over the course of the season I bet I watched three games on there that didn’t involve the Dodgers; the rest of the players/teams just couldn’t sustain my interest.
Ultimately, I don’t have this problem with the NBA. Put a gun to my head, I’m telling you my favorite team is the Bulls, forged by MJ, Pip and a father who grew up outside Chicago loving the likes of Jerry Sloan. But it’s been an up-and-down fanship. For much of grammar, middle and high school, my main focus was the Nets, as I loved being different from the Knick fans I went to school with and I dug Net players through the years like Micheal Ray Richardson, Chris Morris and Kenny Anderson.

The first four seasons of the show focus on the characters' high school years. With the beginning of the fifth season, Schwahn decided to skip the timeline four years ahead, showing their lives after college. In the seventh season, he adjusted the timeline one year into the future after the sixth season.[2] The opening credits were originally intertwined with the song "I Don't Want to Be" by Gavin DeGraw playing in the background. The theme was removed from the opening in the fifth season, due to production costs and Schwahn feeling that it was more so representative of the main five's adolescent lives.[3] The credits then only consisted of the title written on a black background. The theme was restored for Season 8, due to audience demand, and will be sung by different artists each week.[4]
The show has received average ratings, with the second season being the highest rated season, averaging 4.3 million viewers weekly.[5] It has also won Teen Choice Awards. On May 12, 2009, it was confirmed that Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton declined to return for the seventh season, although stories on what transpired vary. Their characters (Lucas and Peyton) had been two of the five main protagonists, as well as one of the central love stories, throughout the show.[6][7][8] Since the two departed, ratings have steadily declined with some episodes reaching below the two million mark; this ties in with the network's other shows that also suffered a decline in ratings.[9]
The CW officially renewed the show for an eighth season consisting of a minimum 12 episodes on May 18, 2010.[10][11] Schwahn said this is the last season all the original cast members are contracted for. However, he is hoping the series could go on for more seasons as the network did not announce this as the last season of the show, which they did for Smallville.[12] Season eight premiered on The CW on Tuesday, September 14. On September 23rd, The CW ordered an additional six scripts for the season, with its episode production order remaining at thirteen.[13]
